Oregon Coast – Day 4

Today was our last day in Newport. Our original plans were to leave today, but since our check-in date in Redmond is Monday, we decided to stay another night on the coast. In order to stay in the same RV park, we had to change RV sites. Our new site is on the row’s end and now we have a better view of the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

In the afternoon, we went to Nye Beach. This beach was Newport’s original oceanfront resort developed in the 1800’s. We walked along the shops and down to the beach to put our feet in the Pacific Ocean. As we approached the water’s edge, it was very windy and chilly. Our toes only touched the water for a second…Oh, Boy…was it cold! The beach area was very wide and there were many areas of deep, fine sand. Several groups of people were on the beach but no one was in the water!

Ken had a craving for clam chowder so we went back to the historic bayfront for lunch. We chose Mo’s Restaurant, home of Mo’s World Famous Clam Chowder. Naturally, the line was very long, but we only had to wait 30 minutes. While we waited, we went across the street to the pier and watched more fish being filleted. Today, the same woman worker as yesterday, was filleting Tuna. It was amazing to watch! She made it look so easy! The secret is in the knife!

We returned to Mo’s and I think we actually missed our seating time, since they seated immediately when we returned. Mo’s is a restaurant chain located along the Oregon Coast, but, the location in the historic bayfront is the original. It opened in 1946 serving loggers and fisherman. Over time it became a favorite of locals, tourists, and celebrities.

I noticed that we were seated close to a garage door that was being used as a window. Ken told me the following story that he had read; One day a customer accidentally left her car in forward gear instead of reverse while leaving and crashed through the front wall. Mo consoled the woman, saying, “Well, we’ll just put in a garage door so we can open it and you can drive in anytime if that’s what you want to do”.

Ken ordered Clam Chowder and I chose the Halibut Fish and Chips. Both were very good!

Back at the RV park, we walked down to the marina, but there was not much activity. Located near our RV Park is the Rogue Ales Brewery. Since we don’t know anything about it, we thought we should check it out be we leave the area. It is a huge warehouse building that serves as the brewery, pub, restaurant, and gift shop. We entered the warehouse directly into the brewery…we could really smell the hops! We stopped in the gift shop, but didn’t see anything we needed. We decided that this place was not for us! We might have missed out on something special!

We are relaxing at the RV and getting ready to move on. Tomorrow we will drive to Redmond, Oregon. We will be attending the FMCA Rally(RV rally) thru August 16. We will be dry-camping(no hook-ups). Dry-camping is a piece of cake in this Bus! The only down side is that we won’t have wi fi.
