Alabama to Arkansas

11 Feb

During our stay at Bella Terra, we encountered some very cold nights!  As we closed up the RV, we noticed that ice had formed on our slide toppers!  That was a first for us in this motorhome!

Leaving Gulf Shores, we made our way north and west to Canton, MS.  We stayed one night in Canton at the MovieTown RV Park.  The RV park was nothing special but we learned that it is home to many Nissan Plant workers during the week.

From Canton, we took the Natchez Trace Parkway to Red Bay, AL.  The Trace was built on the path traveled by the Natchez Indians before they were run out of the area by the French.  It was a forested roadway with farming fields, cows and goats as the only wildlife.

On Saturday, we pulled into The Allegro Campground at the Tiffin Motorhome Service Center in Red Bay, AL.  We new that the service center would be closed for the weekend, but, we wanted to get in line for service first thing Monday morning.  Our plan worked and we were assigned to a service bay Monday morning.

It felt like arctic air as the temperatures dipped into the low 20’s.  BRRRRR!  We were thankful for Electricity and Wi-Fi!  Unfortunately, the water had been turned off due to frozen lines, and we had to rely on our holding tanks for water.  Since all outside trips required bundling, we tried to stay inside as much as possible.  After a couple of days inside, we began to get a little cabin fever.  On Tuesday, we decided we would do the Tiffin Facility Tour.  I thought we would be the only crazy ones on the tour, but, I was surprised to find that we were part of a large group!  I guess the others were also tired of being inside.  The tour started outside the facility and as we gathered ….it began snowing!  It was beautiful large snowflakes, but it was so COLD!

Painting was required for the last part of our service and we were scheduled to take the RV to an offsite location.  At 7:15AM, it was 24 degrees as I followed Ken to the paint and body shop.  The plan was for us to leave the RV all day and pick it up around 4PM.  How were we going to keep busy all day in the small town of Red Bay?  We drove to the Florence/Muscle Shoals area on the Tennessee River.  We drove around looking at the area and discovered some very nice homes right on the water.  We found that they were about the same price as a brand new Tiffin Motorhome!  Is that good or bad?

On our way back to Red Bay, we stopped in Belmont to tour the Tiffin Paint facility.  At first, I didn’t think it was going to be very fun, but, I was fooled and it turned out to be extremely interesting.

Our day definitely ended on a different note.  The painters advised us not to take the RV out into the cold and wanted us to leave it parked inside their garage overnight.  They gave us the key to their garage and let us spend the night in our RV inside the garage with 3 other motorhomes.  The other motorhomes were vacant, so we were the only ones inside.  The good news…it was really warm inside the garage!  We were a little worried about the paint fumes, but my morning they had either subsided or we were completely permeated.

We pulled out of the garage at 8 AM and returned to The Allegro Campground to check out.  We were pleased with the small amount charged for the work completed.  Best deal of all…campground charge for 5 nights, 6 days was $30 total!

The weather was warm and sunny as we pulled out of Red Bay.  We drove west to Tupelo, birthplace of Elvis Presley, and then north to Memphis.  In Memphis we took I-40 West.

Tonight we are in Little Rock, AR at the Downtown River RV Resort.
