Prince George is located at the confluence of the Nechako and Fraser Rivers. It is British Columbia’s 2nd largest city (by area) and a hub for trade and travel routes in the region. The Lumber industry, oil refining, mining, and heavy construction are the major industries. We saw numerous logging truck and multiple trailer semi trucks on the highway every time we ventured away from the RV.
On our very first night in Prince George we met a gentlemen while dining at “Mr.Mikes”. He was full of information and reccomended that we visit the local winery. We tucked that information away and finally decided to check it out near the end of our stay. The Northern Lights Wineryis built on the banks of the Nechako River and is BC’s largest fruit winery. The property produces the fruit for the wines, including gooseberries, raspberries, apples, rhubarb, black currants, cherries, and blueberries. They all sounded delicious!
We arrived at the Winery in the early evening and were seated on the outdoor patio overlooking the fruit orchard along the river. We had a lovely host and wait staff that were very accomodating as well as friendly. They learned we were from the USA and stopped by to chat several times. We ordered a flight of their most popular fruit wines and then made our selection for dinner. The weather was perfect and we had a very relaxing evening.
Poutine
Canadians love their poutine! Costco and McDonalds has poutine on the menu!
Shopping
Shopping in Canada is very interesting. First, the grocery carts require a Loonie to release them from storage. Put in a loonie to release the cart and when you return the cart, the loonie pops out. At the Savon Grocery Store, they had little pull along grocery carts to use for free. They reminded me of the girl’s tuff stuff play grocery cart.
Only Walmart and Costco lets you have a cart without a Loonie.
Second, Grocery bags are needed unless you want to pay for bags at checkout. We finally remebered to take our bags with us to the store.
My favorite store was Canadian Tire. I learned about this store on our previous visits to Canada. It’s not just a tire store…they sell everything from tools, home decor, outdoor living etc. It was a good place to pass the time.
Three weeks was plenty of time to be in Prince George!
