Hoover Met Complex, Sherling Lake, and On to the Beach

28 Jul

We stopped for the night in Hoover, Alabama, the largest suburb of Birmingham. Our home for the evening was the Hoover Met Complex, a multi-use facility featuring a 155,000-square-foot indoor event center and field house, Hoover Met Stadium, a full-service RV park, and numerous outdoor sports fields. The RV park offered 170 spacious pull-through sites with full hookups and Wi-Fi. That evening, we took a walk around the stadium complex and were amazed by the size and quality of the entire facility. It was an impressive place to spend the night.

Our next stop was Sherling Lake Campground, another short driving day. We did manage to miss the campground entrance, however, and had to drive another eight miles before finding a place to turn around. Once we finally arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. The campground was spacious, with generously sized campsites scattered throughout the wooded grounds, giving everyone plenty of room.

We decided to stay hooked up and skip a trip into nearby Greenville, Alabama. In hindsight, that was probably a mistake. I later learned that Greenville has a charming historic downtown—exactly the kind of place I enjoy exploring, probably more than Ken does!

The following morning, we took a short walk around the campground. It was so quiet that we hardly saw another person, and despite the campground’s name, we never even found Sherling Lake.

Before long, we packed up, hit the road, and continued our journey toward beautiful Navarre Beach, FL As we crossed into the Sunshine State, the scenery gradually changed. Tall pine forests gave way to coastal vegetation, and we could tell we were getting closer to the Gulf.

We arrived at Emerald Beach RV Resort right at 1:00 p.m.—perfect timing for check-in! After getting settled into our site, we were ready to begin our eight-day stay on Florida’s beautiful Emerald Coast. We’re looking forward to sunshine, walks on the beach, and plenty of relaxation. I’m sure we’ll see a little rain along the way, but that’s all part of the Florida experience!
