Prince Edward Island (PEI) – Day 1

25 Jul

July 22

It rained again last niight…ALL night.  It was pouring rain when we heard our neighbors packing up to leave around 6 AM.  The rain did not keep them from their scheduled departure. At least, the rain had stopped when we packed up, but, it did continue to rain throughout the day.

We left the campground @ 9:30 AM for our drive to Prince Edward Island (PEI).  PEI is one of the three Maritime provinces on Canada’s east coast.  It is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, north of the Nova Scotia peninsula and east of New Brunswick. Another place to check off of our bucket list!

Our drive was a fairly easy ride from New Brunswick to the crossing of the impressive Confederation Bridge. The bridge was completed in 1997, and links Prince Edward Island to New Brusnwick.  The bridge is 8 miles in length, therefore, weather conditions need to be monitored.  Since we are a high profile vehicle, we were monitoring the bridge forecast.  The bridge was open to all traffic  and the traffic was running smoothly for our trip!

After crossing the bridge, we began to notice lots of green fields – mostly potatoes.  There were several large fields of yellow and I believe that could have been Canola. We also saw fields of corn and wheat.

When we arrived at the Cornwall/Charlottetown KOA, it looked as though it could rain at any moment.  I quickly checked in and got directions to our site.  Unfortunately, because our RV is so long, we had to drive all the way around the campground to get back to our site.  Nothng like touring the entire campground before parking! Our site is grass and that makes me a little nervous after our experience in Bangor, ME.  Fingers crossed that we wont have a problem when we leave.

While I was in the campground office, I learned that Halifax, Nova Scotia was under water.  WOW…we are going to Nova Scotia in 6 days. We will have to monitor the road conditions. Hopefully, we won’t have any delays.

Since we arrived in the mid afternoon, we decided to take a drive from Cornwall into Charlottetown.  We drove down to the Wharf area and through some of the historic areas.  We will need to visit Charlottetown again when we have a better idea of what to see. The streets were confusing and our GPS was not helpful.

We have 6 nights in PEI and hope to see many beautiful and interesting places on the island.
