We have been hearing from other travelers, about the bad road conditions after crossing the US border. We really weren’t sure what to expect! As it turned out we had a fairly easy drive.
As Ken kept a close watch on the road, his best friend quickly became the orange flags that were placed alongside frost heaves. While the speed limit is 65 mph, I don’t know why anyone would want to drive that fast. In addition to the frost heaves, there were potholes. I found the ride to be very bumpy, but, if you ask Ken…the road was good! With no flat tires and no rock chips, I’ll take it.
Crossing over the border between Canada and Alaska was a breeze. There wasn’t even another car ahead of us in the line! We saw lots and lots of motor homes heading south, so, I guess we’re nearing the tail end of the drive up the Alaska highway!
The highway took us through the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, a 730,000 acre refuge. This section was also quite scenic with lots of small lakes/ponds/streams and views of the Wrangell Mountains and the eastern end of the Alaska Range. We crossed the Tanana River, which was familiar to us from watching the Discovery Channel’s Yukon Men. There was also a question about this river recently at our Monday night Trivia!
Since we had a time change after crossing the border, we ended up reaching our destination, Tok, before noon! We checked in to Tok RV Village and started planning our Top Of The World Highway trip.
Tomorrow – We leave the RV behind and travel to Dawson City!
