2019 Summer Adventure

Day 1

July 10, 2019

We are getting a late start this year on our annual Summer Adventure.  We were fortunate to have our daughter Leslie, and three grandchildren from GA stay with us for five weeks.  The time flew by quickly and was packed with fun activities and memories.   We even had Lindsay’s two girls stay with us for a few days …five children ages 3-9 was a handfull for Grandparents!  We survived!  After five weeks, It was a bittersweet good-bye, but, time for Phase II of Summer 2019 to begin!

After much discussion about where to go on our summer trip, we decided on Alaska as our destination.  Ken spent numerous hours getting the RV ready for our trip and assured me it was serviced, clean, and ready to roll!

We pulled away from our home around 10:30 AM driving towards Flagstaff, AZ.  As we were driving through traffic on I-17 near Northern Ave., our front window shade bracket broke and fell…clink, clunk, boom!  I looked up and saw the shade unit hanging diagonally across the windshield.  The window shade, an automatic retractable day/night shade, had many wires attached.  As Ken continued driving for aproximately 5 miles, I had to stand near the dash, bungee cord the shade, and hold the shade to keep it from disconnecting on the driver side.  We were finally able to pull off at Dixieleta road and access the damage.  Ken was able to rig the shade using zip ties!  He is the real McGyver! Note to self;  don’t buy large quantities of zip ties and store them in heat…they become very brittle!

Late in the afternoon, we arrived safely in Flagstaff and checked into Black Barts RV Park.  We were assigned a pull-thru site and settled in for a one night stay.  We quickly found out that our troubles were not over!  The back driver side slideout would not extend all the way.  Ken had worked numerous hours on this slide-out after our last trip and believed it was fixed.  Wrong!   Home Depot to the rescue!

Ken spent his entire evening working on the slide out and window blinds.  Oh, yes, we noticed that another blind was lose and needed attention, also!

Everything is fixed and in working order.  Let’s move on!
