This morning, at 9:15, there was a patch of sunshine in the sky. We had high hopes for a beautiful day, at last! But, by 9:30, the sky was cloudy and all hopes for a beautiful day were gone.
We passed through several small towns; Alpine, Grover, and Afton. Afton has the world’s largest Elkhorn Arch. The arch is made up of 3011 Elk Antlers and spans across the main street of town. The World’s only intermitting Spring is located just a few miles away…Periodic Spring.
We continued on highway 89 through the Salt River Pass. As we started downhill at a 7% grade, we could see lots of low hanging clouds.
As we crossed into Idaho, it was…SUNNY! The landscape changed to continuous rolling hills. We drove through Montpelier, ID, one of the states oldest towns. Brigham Young named this community after the capital of Vermont, his home state.
As we continued on highway 89 we came across a small stretch of road construction. It sure was narrow! We passed through the small community’s of Paris, St Charles, and Fish Haven.
In Utah, the sun was still shining bright! It is so much more fun to travel on a sunny day! We traveled on the Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway up to the Bear Lake rest area/overlook. Bear Lake is a blue colored lake with sandy beaches. It is very large…20 miles long, 8 miles wide, and 208 feet deep. Even though it had turned into a beautiful, sunny day, the temperature was 61 degrees and windy when we walked to the overlook. We have seen this lake before but it was still a very beautiful sight.
As we walked back to our RV, we were approached by a French tourist. He was curious about how we tow our jeep. He explained to Ken, that towing is not allowed in France. He barely spoke English, but at least he tried. We are always amazed at how many foreigners we encounter on our trips…all of them are seeing spots in the US that most of our citizens never see!
Leaving Bear Lake we continued on highway 89. We followed the winding road along creeks(Logan Creek) beneath cliffs and through pine forests. There were a few sharp turns! The road continued through Logan and Brigham City over to Interstate 15.
We had a nice, quick view of the Great Salt Lake, but we didn’t stop. It is very difficult to get a picture of the lake from the highway!
It is not as interesting traveling on the interstate but it is quicker. We stayed on I-15 through Salt Lake City to Nephi, UT. We checked into the Jones Hi Country RV Park. It is very small, but has several open spaces. Later in the afternoon, another Allegro Bus pulled into the park and parked next to us. We noticed that they are from AZ too!
