Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson
Day 13
July 22, 2019
Day one on the Alaska Highway. We started out at 8:15 AM traveling to Fort Nelson BC and the Triple G Campground.
About Halfway between Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson, after along decent, the engine light came on and an alarm sounded. We began to smell smoke and the smoke alarm began doing it’s thing! Luck for us, we were near a truck engine-break pull-out and we had a place to pull off the road safely. Once we were off the road we quickly got out of the RV! When Ken opened the engine compartment, I could see smoke releasing in the air…something was hot! Then, Ken noticed that we were leaking anti-freeze. The leak caused the engine to heat up and the alarms to sound. What were we going to do? We were half way between towns near “nowhere” and we didn’t have cell service. Ken took apart the aqua-hot system and found the busted hose. Trying not to panic, I collected all of our valuables…computers, ipads, cameras, medicine, walking shoes, and passports. In case we had to leave the RV and drive the jeep for assistance, we would have some necessities. Thankfully, my preparations were not needed. Ken was able to fix the problem and we were back on the road within 1/12 to 2 hours. Again, Ken is the real McGyver! Thank you Max Misner (Ken’s Dad) for teaching your son some great skills! Note: Only one person stopped to see if we needed help. I watched an entire RV caravan pass us by.
We made one more stop to add more water and then continued safely to the Triple G Campground in Fort Nelson. We arrived at 4:30 PM. Thankfully, we had reservations! The RV caravan that passed us on the road had already arrived…probably 2 hours earlier!
At the campground, Ken had to finish putting everything back together that he had taken apart to fix our problem. It seems like nothing ever goes together like it should…it took him another 2 hours get it all together. He was exhausted, mentally and physically!
(I didn’t take too photos today. My senses were too busy too think too much about the scenery.)
Oh, what an Adventure!
