The End of the Road – Homer

Homer is at the end of the Sterling Highway, 200 miles south of Anchorage, surrounded by wilderness and ocean.

The remainder of our stay in Homer was very interesting!  There were 3 fires blazing through the Kenai; Swan Lake Fire, Caribou Fire, and North Fork Fire. Those fires prompted smoke advisories throughout the Kenai Peninsula and closure of the Sterling Highway, the only road into Homer. The road was closed, off and on, throughout our stay in Homer.  From time to time, the road opened, but there were long traffic delays due firefighters and construction workers working along the road. Each time the road opened, several RV’s would leave our RV park.  By the end of our week, there were only 4 RV’s in the campground!

We were experiencing the smoke in our campground and our visibility was limited. We were unable to see the mountains and glaciers across the bay. So much for our fabulous view! But, we had reservations until Saturday, and we decided to stay put and make the best of our time in Homer.

Kilcher Road – The Kilcher’s are homesteaders that are documented on the Discovery Channel Show The Last Frontier. The Homestead is open for tours until 2PM and we arrived too late.

The fires were still burning, but, the smoke was not so bad on Homer Spit.
