Today, Ken wanted to do a jeep ride into the mountains to the Wheeler Geologic Area. I did some research and and found that it was a rugged, trail climbing to 13,000 feet. He told me we would turn around if it was too rough. So….we set out on the Silver Thread Byway towards the trail, but, I then Ken changed his mind. I was happy, but, I think Ken was disappointed.
Continuing on the Silver Thread Byway for about twenty miles outside of Creede, we drove on a dirt road to the Rio Grande Reservoir. Boating and fishing are the primary activities, but a wide range of outdoor activities including mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, climbing, hunting, and hiking were available in the area. The reservoir was very scenic and there were several fishing boats in the water. We saw something new to us…a fishing boat with a solar panel for power! How unique is that?
After leaving the Reservoir, we continued on the Silver Thread Byway. As we were traveling along, I spotted what I thought was either a cow or horse. But, I was wrong…it was a Moose! Ken pulled over so we could watch the Moose in the wetland. That is the first Moose we have seen in the lower 48 in several years.
A few miles down the road, I spotted a deer crossing the road. Wow! Two wildlife sightings in about 15 minutes!
We stopped at North Clear Creek Falls. Though it is not visible from the road, the cascade of water that appears almost magically out of a meadow took our breath away. This gorgeous waterfall is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Colorado.
As we continued driving, we saw some incredible scenery!
After crossing the Slumguillion Pass, 11.530 feet, we encountered some road work, twice, before reaching Lake City. This little town sits in the valley floor surrounded by thirteen and fourteen thousand foot mountain peaks. We drove through town and decided to continue on towards Gunnison, Colorado.
Our GPS did not like the route we chose. The GPS was directing us to turn around and return the way we came. Because of the road construction and wait times, Ken didn’t want to turn around. So, we took the long way home; Gunnison, Saguache, Del Norte, South Fork, Creede. It was a long drive, but the scenery was beautiful.
After Returning to the RV Park and settling in for the night, I noticed this Sunset out our window!
