Day 6
July 15, 2019
Leaving North Fork Idaho, we continued north on highway 93. It was only 68 miles to our destination, Polson, MT. We drove up through the Lost Trail Pass at 7,014 ft and then made the long descent into the Bitteroot Valley. The nearby mountains were green but some of the distant mountains still had snow.
As we were driving along we came upon a flashing sign alerting us that there was a Bike Event in progress. There were quite a few adventurous bikers on the road climbing up to the summit. Some were riding pretty well, but then there were others that were struggling. It was a big mountain to climb on a bike!
We hadn’t been traveling long, when we came upon the Big Animal Bridge, a wildlife crossing that allows animals to cross over the highway. US 93 has 39 wildlife crossing structures withing 56 miles on the Flathead Indian Reservation. In addition to the Big Animal Bridge, there are small, medium and large culverts tunneling underneath the road, too. It is estimated that 22,000 animals use the crossing every year.
We drove past the National Bison Range and along the western shore of the Flathead Lake arriving at our destination- Polson, MT. Polson lies at the south end of Flathead Lake and is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
This year we decided to only stay 2 nights at the Polson Motorcoach & RV Resort. The resort grounds were tiered and all RV sites face forward with lake views. Since it was a condominium resort, many of the sites were owned and occupied with folks that stay for the summer season. The owned sites were spectacular! They had gorgeous landscape, patios with large seating areas, fireplaces and outdoor kitchens. Our site was one of the “unsold” sites, therefore, it doesn’t have any improvements. However, it was a great site with a good location and great view of the lake!
The sky looked as though rain was eminent, but, the air was warm and I was able to get some outside reading time before the rain started. Inside, we finished off the delicious pizza from last night.
Tomorrow we are looking forward to lunch at a favorite Bar-B-Q restaurant and maybe some Cherry picking!
