Lubbock is a West Texas town that was home to music legends such as Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings, but the city is known for much more. A vibrant arts scene, a rich Western heritage, award-winning wine, Texas Tech University, and fine dining are just a few of the things this friendly, City has to offer.
The first attraction we checked off our to-do list wasTexas Tech University, the nation’s second largest campus. The campus was beautiful with its Spanish Renaissance architecture and spacious grounds. It appeared to be moving-in day for the students since we saw lots of students and parents hanging out near the school entrance. As we drove around the campus, we even got to see the Red Raider Mascot!
Our next stop was the National Ranching Heritage Center which is located on the Texax Tech campus. It was definitely a museum of ranching history. There were fifty authentic ranch buildings dating from the late 18th to mid-20th century. We walked along the outdoor path to view the houses, cabins, and barns. It was absolutely fascinating and beautiully done. Touring the museum was definitely an upgrade from reading about it in a book…!
Cook’s Garage
After the outdoor tour at the Ranching Museum, we were ready to cool off and enjoy some lunch. The nice folks we met at the Ski Resort in Ruidoso, recommended a place called Cook’s Garage. They told us a little background on the place, but, we were surprised when we pulled into the parking lot …there were signs everywhere!
Cook’s Garage is home to one of the largest collections of neon and vintage oil and gas signs…outside and inside. We entered the restaurant and found many more vintage signs from all kinds of businesses…gas stations, restaurants, hotels and motels. While waiting on our lunch, we didn’t run out of things to look at. During lunch we even had live entertainment! After lunch we walked around the whole place and enjoyed sign after sign and cool auto relics. There was even a large pavillion for concerts. I’m pretty sure this place is rockin’ on the weekends!
On our last night in Lubbock, we sat outside with our RV neighbors and enjoyed the cooler evening temperature. Our neighbors were anxious to begin their full-time RV life. I wish them happiness, but, the full-time RV living is not for me!
Tomorrow we are traveling to Branson, MO
