Highway 17 is the scenic highway between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Leaving Charleston, we drove across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge spanning the Cooper River. The next 7 miles stretch of highway is known a “sweetgrass basket makers highway”. The SC low country is the primary location where crafters make and sell their sweetgrass baskets in roadside stands. I was hoping to stop and buy one of the beautifully crafted baskets, but there were not many stands in operation. Since the highway has been widened in recent years, the space and access is limited. None of the stands that were open could accommodate our 43′ RV towing a vehicle!
The PirateLand Family Camping Resort is tucked away on the south end of Myrtle Beach, SC, and was our home for 4 days. Our campsite had a beach view and easy access to the 1/2 mile of beachfront along the Atlantic ocean. Golf carts are the mode of transportation with the camping resort. It seems like every campsite rents at least 1 Golf Cart. Some folks get creative and decorate their carts with garland, streamers, and large beach blow up toys! We were only 2 sites from the beach and couldn’t justify the $60/day fee!
We spent as much time in our beach chairs as possible enjoying the sun, water, and some good reading material! On the fourth and last day, my sunscreen failed…I got a good old-fashioned sunburn!
We drove to Murrell’s Inlet to have dinner at Drunken Jack’s. It was a very popular place and we had to wait over an hour for a table. We were lucky to get 2 seats in the bar and as we sipped our drinks, we had a good view of the inlet. We ordered seafood and it was delicious!
Myrtle Beach is fun and relaxing and continues to be one of our favorite places!
