Day 2
July 11, 2019
After all of yesterday’s excitement, we were surprised to wake up feeling so rested. We were ready to get on the road again!
When we left Flagstaff at 10 AM it was 84 degrees and partly cloudy. We neaded north on Highway 89. As always, the scenery was beautiful. As we drove through the Navajo Indian Reservation, we passed several roadside booths selling Indian Jewelery. Usually, the booths are empty, but today, they were open for business and had many customers. I have purchased Indian Jewlelry before so we drove on by today.
We connected with highway 89A at Bitter Springs. On this route we had views of Marble Canyon, Colorado River, Navajo Bridge, Lees Ferry, and the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.
We chose Jacob Lake, near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, as our destination. We had stayed there several times before and knew the check-in procedure…first come first served. We needed to arrive early to get a spot.
As we approached the Marble Canyon area near Jacob Lake, we encountered light rain, lightning, thunder, and HAIL! The hail didn’t last long, but, it did accumulate on our windshield wipers!
Upon arrival to the campground, we picked a back-in site that allowed for decent satellite reception. The campground did not offer hook-ups(water, electricity, sewer) but we could run our generator for lights, cooking, and TV. Mostly lights and TV!
Today was a great day and as the Tiffin Corporate motto states … we are “Roughing it Smoothly”!
