Day 8 Summer Adventure 2018

June 9, 2018

We pulled out of the Grand Junction KOA Saturday morning and were on the road by 9:45am. We drove 247 miles to Provo Utah.  Our route started on I-70 and was not as scenic as on previous days. Thinking back, it was the first time we had driven on the interstate since Flagstaff, AZ.

We stopped at a rest area and parked next to a trailer carrying pop-up-trailers.  Looking at the campers brought back great memories of our travels as a young family.  I stepped out of the RV to snap a photo just as the driver was returning to his rig.  He said,  “Are you thinking about downsizing?’.  Laughing at his comment,I explained why I wanted the photo.  We love our RV but have great memories of our Coleman pop-up.

Exiting on Highway 6, we continued on towards Provo.  The Utah scenery never disappoints! On highway 6 we drove along the Price River through the Price Canyon and through the cities of Price and Helper. Driving along on the highway, we were paralleling the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad transcontinental line. I spotted several train tunnels and miles of train tracks, but, no train today!

Arriving in Provo, we checked into Lakeside RV.  Near the RV Park, I spotted a storage facility with lots of Gas Station signs. Why so many signs?  It turned out to be the Lakeside Petroliana Museum.  Unaware that it was a museum or that we could have taken a tour, I stood on the roadside, peeking through the fence and brush to get a few photos.  After further research, I found that the museum exhibits included antique porcelain signs, an antique gas station, and close to a hundred antique gas pumps from 1917 to the late fifties. The collection included extremely rare signs.  The collection also included antique cars and auto memorabilia from the good old days when gas was below $.20/gal!

Since, this was our first time in Provo, we did a driving tour of the city.  The two best attractions were the Mormon Temple and Brigham Young University.  The Campus was very beautiful and the Temple was stunning!

Back at the RV, it was laundry day.  Our washing machine hadn’t been used since last summer, and it decided to malfunction.  Instead of watching TV…I got to watch the washing machine, ensuring it moved properly through its cycles!

Tomorrow – Pocatello, Idaho
