Day 6 June 3, 2014

6 Jun

Carbondale, CO

Last night the Temperatures dipped into the “cool” zone!  I’m not sure of the exact temperature, but, we woke up feeling a little chilled, so, Ken fired up the heat to warm things up.  When we finally got outside, it was sunny and 57 degrees.

Unsure of what to do today, we evaluated our options; 1) go back to Aspen, 2) go back to Glenwood springs.  We chose Glenwood Springs.  Once we arrived, we couldn’t find anything at the visitor center that peaked our interest.  However, across the street, we spotted the Doc Holliday Tavern and knew it was a good photo opportunity.

Driving back toward the KOA we decided to take Highway 133 S beyond our campground.  We drove through the small town of Redstone, named for the Crystal River Valley red sandstone cliffs.  At the turn of the century this utopian village housed the men who worked in the coal mines and coke ovens.  We were able to get an upclose view of the coke ovens.

Further South on Highway 133, we turned off and drove to the summit of McClure Pass, elevation 8763 feet. All of the Rivers and Creeks in this area are running fast, with many rapids, due to the spring run off. Today we found two beautiful waterfalls, the first we have seen.

We ended our day on our patio, again, watching and listening to the Crystal River. Tomorrow – Golden, CO
