We are doing things a little different for this adventure…we actually made advance reservations! Over the last few years, it has become necessary to make reservations when traveling to popular destinations near the major summer holidays. However, we have left some time in our schedule for some unexpected/planned side trips. What’s the fun in always knowing where you are going to be?
We pulled away from our home around 11:00 AM and headed up the mountain to Flagstaff, AZ.
Over the past few weeks the fire danger has been very high up in northern AZ. We expected to see signage alerting travelers of the danger. As we made it through Phoenix and approached Black Canyon City, the highway signs alerted us to “Smoke on the Highway”. We could see the smoke for a long distance and as we got closer, we could see a brush fire off the side of the freeway. Rain would definitely be welcome!
In Flagstaff, we stayed at Black Barts RV Park and Steakhouse Saloon. It was our first visit to the RV park and it was easy access to a long pull-through site. It was definitely good for an overnight stay! There is a Steakhouse on property and by the number of cars we counted in the parking lot, it appears to be a popular place! Since reservations are preferred, we decided to pass on the Steak Dinner! Maybe next time?
The evening temperature began to cool off considerably as we walked around the campground. Anything under 90 is cool during the summer! The cooler mountain temperatures is why Valley folks go to the high country in the summer!
Tomorrow we will drive towards Cortez, CO.
