Leaving Richmond Hill, GA, we continued our drive up the coast towards Charleston, SC. We checked into the James Island County Park Campground, just a short drive from downtown Charleston.
Charleston is the oldest city in the state of South Carolina and was founded in 1670 as Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England. Charleston is known for its rich history, antebellum architecture, cobblestone walks, and Spanish Moss-draped trees.

We started our self-guided tour at the visitor center and watched the movie”Forever Charleston”. Next, we drove to “The Battery” to view the beautiful historic homes and a glimpse of Fort Sumter.
As we drove up and down the narrow streets of Charleston, we came across a very congested area with tourists and tour buses. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we were right in front of the Emanuel AME Church of Charleston.

Our drive on the Historic Plantation Highway was cut short due to a down pour of rain and a tremendous lightning show! We will have to catch the Plantations on a future trip!
