Fort Nelson to Summit Lake
Day 14
July 23, 2019
It was a beautiful day as we left Fort Nelson BC. The roadway started out slightly bumpy, but, not too bad. The scenery was pretty, but, there was not really any attractions on this part of the highway. Today, Wildlife was suppose to be the attraction! Summit Lake was our destination and it was only a 90 mile drive.
About 10 miles before arriving at our destination, we noticed a car stopped in the road. Ken thought that people were walking their large dogs. Ha Ha! It was 2 caribou wandering next to the road. I read that Caribou often travel in groups and run parallel in front of vehicles if approached. They are distinguished by their velvey antlers and beautiful markings. I noticed the velvety antlers right away!
In 2011 and 2012, we stayed at Summit Lake in our 35’ motorhome. Now that we have a 43’ motorhome, I didn’t think there would be spaces large enough for us to park. And, if there were any large spaces, I was sure they would all be taken. The campground is in a Provincial Park and they do not take reservations…first come, first served. Much to my surprise, when we arrived before noon, the campground was practically empty. We found a large, long site overlooking the lake. I would call it a premium site! Only $20 Canadian/night…that’s like $15 US!
Stone Mountain & Summit Lake are at the highest point on the Alska Highway. Summit Lake is at an elevation of 4,250 feet above sea level. The weather in this area can change dramatically and very quickly. Apparently, it snows here every month of the year! When we arrived it was warm and sunny. Within the next few hours we experienced clouds, mist, rain, and hail! I think the hail lasted for at least 20 minutes. It was lucky that Ken hiked the mountain earlier between rain and hail! The firewood we bought from the Ranger upon arrival will have to travel with us to our next destination!
