Florida

29 Jul

We left the Savannah, GA KOA on July 4 and began our trek to  Fort Myers,FL to visit Ken’s Family; mom, dad, brother, and sister.  We knew that the trip would take 2 days…Fort Myers is located in Southern Florida on the Gulf Coast.  It is always a lot further than it seems!

We stopped at the Florida Welcome Center for our traditional glass of OJ.  As long as I can remember, we have stopped to taste the Florida OJ!   The rest of the day was short for me…I was sleeping!   We stopped in Summerfield, located near The Villages, and checked into the Southern Oaks RV Park, where we stayed a few years ago.  The registration office was closed, but, Lucky for us, we arrived  just in time for the resort’s annual July 4th Bar-B-Q!  There was a large assortment of  food; burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salads, fruit and desert.  It was all delicious!  What a great surprise for us!

After the Bar-B-Q, we drove to Lake Weir to check out some RV home sites.  We had been receiving advertisements and information from the developers showing new home construction with RV garages.  We were curious!  Upon finding the location, we were disappointed!  It was nothing like we had imagined!

Next, we drove to the active retirement community of The Villages.  We enjoyed seeing their 4th of July activities on the Town Square.  As always, the town square was full of golf carts!  Patriotism runs deep in The Villages and many of the golf carts were decorated for the 4th of July.  It would be a fun place to live, but, we aren’t sure that we really want to live in Florida.

After leaving The Villages, we got lost in the Florida countryside.  Fortunately, while we tried to find our way back to civilization, we were entertained with some great Oldie’s Music on the radio!  They were playing the top 50 songs from the 60’s from Artists that were not from the US or Britain.  We were amazed that we knew so many of the lyrics.  We were driving through the countryside singing to the tunes!

Florida, Fourth of July, and Fireworks…we have done this so many times over the years, but it is not the same without our children!  We started seeing fireworks from our RV front window at 8:30 PM.  That is so much earlier than AZ Fireworks displays!

Our next stop will be a long one…Fort Myers and Family!
