Where have we been?
Over the last few days we have been traveling on I-7o through Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. In Wakeeney, KS we experienced a large rain and wind storm. Wind is not our favorite!
In Topeka, Kansas we stayed at the Deer Valley Creek RV Park, the same place where we stayed last fall. While un-hitching the Jeep, we discovered that the battery was dead. Ken jumped the battery and we were set!
Since we were in Kansas, we wanted to find a good BBQ restaurant. We ate a late lunch at Boss Hawgs BBQ, a highly recommended restaurant. I had the Beef Brisket sandwich and Ken had the Pulled Pork sandwich. It was delicious! Thanks to the Deer Valley RV Park for the recommendation!
Back to the Jeep…yep…the jeep would not start! Luckily, we have roadside service from several clubs, and we were able to get service quickly. Of course, they wanted to sell us a new battery, but Ken was not a taker! Later, we bought a new battery at the local Wal-Mart. While waiting in the jeep with the engine running, I discovered that Wal-Mart is the place to be in Topeka on a Saturday night!
Leaving Topeka, we drove to Columbia, MO. Cottonwoods RV Park is another RV park where we stayed last fall. I remember it well! It is the place where Ken lost his iPhone and we had to drive 30 miles back to the park to retrieve it. This time, we made sure we both had our phones in hand when we pulled out of the park.
Columbia, MO is home to the University of Missouri. We drove through the beautiful 1,358 acre campus to view some of the historic buildings. The grounds are very well manicured and have been officially designated as a botanical garden. We were very impressed with the campus! There are also two other colleges in the area; Stephens College and Columbia College.
At the RV Park we met our “neighbors for the night”, Ken and Linda from Alabama. They have traveled quite a bit and highly recommended we go tot Charleston, The Citadel, and Savannah. These places were already on our list!
Camp Lakewood, in Effingham, IL, is another one of our favorite stopping points. We love stopping here because the park is nice and the folks that run the park are very friendly! We learned on an earlier visit that they winter in AZ very close to our home! Craving some good old midwestern corn, we drove into town looking for an Amish Vegetable Stand where we stopped last year. No luck…it is too early in the season! We were able to find corn on the cob at the local grocery store and it was excellent! There is nothing quite like midwestern corn and tomatoes!
Tomorrow – Columbus, Indiana – our “hometown”
