Canada

31 Aug

Today’s drive from Tok to Haines Jct.  was a “roller coaster” ride! We experienced improved sections of road alternating with damaged, frost heave sections of road.

Just before crossing the Canadian Border, Ken spotted a bear crossing the road. It was so far away it took me a few seconds to believe that it really was a bear and not a tree or rock. I was able to get a few pictures, but, not good ones. How exciting!

We crossed the border into Canada without any problems!  The line was longer than before, but, everyone made it through with flying colors!

Canada – Border Crossing

Ken said the highway would improve once we crossed into Canada, but, I didn’t recognize any improvement.  The road wasn’t terrible…just not smooth!  It was the section of road that presents unique challenges. The soil along the highway is of glacial origin. The road materials cause the permafrost to melt and the soil to liquefy. When the soil refreezes it expands and causes the frost heaves. Many of the frost heaves have been fixed, but, there are some that are sneaky.

Again, the scenery was spectacular.  The tall mountains had a mixture of deep snow and glaciers.  It was alot like driving on the Icefields parkway through the Canadian Rockies.  Beautiful!

We were in this same area on August 3 and it is amazing how quickly the leaves have changed color. Everything is turning yellow!

We ended our day in Haines Jct. and checked into the Fas Gas RV park, again.  Tonight, there were several RV’s already checked-in when we arrived.  On our earlier stop, the park was empty.

It was good place to crash for the night.

We have been experiencing some RV battery issues and had to get out the jumper cables twice to get started.  Ken spent the remainder of the day troubleshooting the problem. I know he will figure it out!

Tomorrow – Whitehorse, YT
