Lakes, Rivers, and Wildlife

Day 15

July 24, 2019

Today was day 3 on the Alaska Highway. This section of the highway had good pavement with some road construction.  It was a winding road with both narrow and wide sections.  Our route took us through Toad River and past Mucho Lake.

We made a quick stop at Toad River so Ken could work on our dash cam.  There is not much to see in Toad River:  a maintenance camp, a school, an airstrip, and the Toad River Lodge & RV Park. The historic lodge has a restaurant, motel, cabins, and gas station and has been a fixture on the highway since the 1940”s.  I’m pretty sure it still looks the same as it did in the 40”s!!  The lodge is known for it’s collection of hats, so, I went inside to check it out.  Yes, there were lots and lots hats hanging from the ceiling!

Ken’s Dash Cam fix

As few miles further, we drove past Muncho Lake, known for its beautiful deep green and blue waters. It was so cloudy and rainy that we could not see the deep green color. There was no need to stop for photos!  At Muncho Lake, we passed the Northern Rockies Lodge, where Gabe and Leslie stayed on their move to Alaska in 2009.

Muncho Lake on a cloudy day

We made it to our destination, Liard Hot Springs, before noon.  The Springs is a favorite stop for Alaska Highway travelers. We drove through the campground and selected #46, the perfect RV site for us.  Even though it was still very cloudy, we packed up our bathing suits and towels and took a 10 minute walk down the boardwalk to the hot springs. We were anxious to see the reconstruction that had taken place since our last visit in 2012.  As we approached we could see the changes, but, it was still the same natural hot spring.  There were 2 hot spring pools with temperatures ranging from 108 degrees to 126 degrees. There were several people in the water, but not crowded. The water was hot, but, very nice. The temperature varied as we moved around from end to end. We met two really nice Canadian ladies that told us about a “trail” at the end of the hot springs.  We had to cross over and under logs and trees to get to the end where there were two small waterfalls.  It was a nice treat! We left the hot springs after about an hour feeling like we needed a nap! This was definitely a highlight of our trip so far!

The scenery on the Alcan was beautiful, even though the day was a mixture of low hanging clouds and rain.

On the road today, we saw 1 buffalo, horses, sheep/goats?,  and 1 black bear.
