Big Texan or Bust

11 Sep

Before departing Waco TX, we need a plan to continue our trip through TX. We love Fredericksburg and Luckenbach TX, but, we have stopped there on our last two Texas trips.  So, we decided to start driving NE towards Amarillo.

It was cool(75 degrees) and rainy, when we pulled away from our campground in Waco, on Saturday September 8.  Ken usually likes to keep our daily mileage around 200 miles.  We went a little further, driving 227 miles  to the Bar J Hitching Post RV Park in Sweetwater TX.

Sunday, September 9,  was another cool day…it was 67 degrees when we woke up.  The weather continued to be cloudy and cool as we drove (245 miles) towards Lubbock and finally ending our day in Amarillo.

We checked into the Amarillo RV Ranch and made arrangements for a 6:00 PM Limo Pick-up for our Date Night at the Big Texan…Home of the Free 72 ounce steak.

We arrived at the Big Texan in a Limo complete with a Longhorn Hood Ornament! We stepped out in front of the bright yellow building with Texas flags flapping like pennants. We took some fun souvenir photos in front of the restaurant before going inside.  Entering the restaurant we were greeted and seated quickly.  Our table location was not quite as good as on our first visit.  We were seated at the end of a long table on the main level close to the grill.  We did have view of the special table that was set for the next brave soul to attempt the 72 oz steak challenge.  In order to get the steak dinner for free, the entire meal has to be consumed within 1 hour. The meal includes: 72 oz steak, shrimp cocktail. baked potato, salad, roll with butter. Over 50,000 have started the challenge and less than 9000 have finished.  Unfortunately, there were no challengers tonight!

Ken ordered the Prime Rib dinner and I ordered a steak dinner… not the enormous challenge portion! Both dinners were more than we could consume…a box to go was in order.  The food was excellent! Again, we were disappointed that no one was taking the 72 oz challenge while we were seated!

After dinner, we checked out the attractions throughout the building; gift shop, shooting gallery, outdoor beer garden, 18-foot-tall Big Texan boot.  I was attracted (again) to the oversize rocking chair!

At the conclusion of our fun evening at the Big Texan, we rode back to the RV Ranch in style…the limo service picked us up and delivered us back to our RV.

Tomorrow – Albuquerque, NM
