Big Things In A Small Town – Casey, Illinois

1 Sep

On the Road Again after spending ten days in Indiana.  We were traveling on I-70 towards Effingham, Il when we came across a roadside sign advertising that  we should Turn now for Worlds’ largest something!  As we continued on the freeway, we saw signs for large (and even some of the world’s largest) versions of things.  Not everything is worth a detour or even a stop, but, since we had seen the World’s Largest Ball of Paint, we decided we should see more World’s Largest Things.

We exited the freeway towards the small town of Casey, Illinois.  Casey is home to multiple Guinness World Record Items and other big objects.  Casey is now famous for being ranked as the town for having the most Big Things in a Small Town.  Currently, eight of the world’s largest items are on display around town.  The World’s Largest items include:  wind chimes, mailbox, rocking chair, knitting needles, crochet hook, pitch fork, golf tee, and wooden shoes.  The Big items include: pencil, yardstick, spinning top, bird-cage, large wooden coin, and rocking horse.

We parked the RV in a vacant parking lot and walked around town looking for the Large Objects.  We only found the things that we could see while walking around town.  Driving the RV around the small town of Casey was not feasible.  We found the giant birdcage, mailbox (my favorite), pencil, rocking chair, knitting needles, crochet hook, dutch wooden shoes, wind chime, and teeter totter.  We stopped by the Big Things in A Small Town Workshop where workers built all of the Big Things in town and caught a glimpse of the new things they’re working on. We saw a huge golf club, softball bat and mousetrap on our visit.

A big part of what makes RV Travel fun is all of the stops we make along our journey. Any road trip that includes a stop with some unforgettable roadside Americana is just another way for us to make lasting memories.

Since we were near one of our favorite campgrounds, we made reservations to stay at Camp Lakewood in Effingham, Il.

As we continue West towards AZ, we will be on the lookout for more roadside attractions!
