Zion National Park

28 Sep

Today we drove 100 miles to Hurricane, UT. The Willow Wind RV Park was our “home” for 2 nights.  All RV parks closer to Zion were full, so, we made the 25 mile drive to Zion National Park from Hurricane. There are many RVers and tourists from all over the country on the road this fall!

Zion National Park was very crowded as we made the 12 mile scenic drive on the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway. The scenic highway connects the south and east entrances. The road traveled up steep switchbacks, through two tunnels, and provided sweeping views of towering cliffs, deep red canyons, mesas, and buttes.

On our second day, we chose to take two different scenic drives. Kolob Canyons Road was a five-mile scenic drive climbing past spectacular canyons and red rocks. The Kolob Terrace Road was a steep 20-mile scenic drive starting in the town of Virgin, climbing north into the aspen-covered plateaus of the higher elevations of Zion NP.  We saw some beautiful fall colors surrounding the Kolob Reservoir, and at the end of the roadway we made a short walk out to Lava Point to take in the view.

What happened to the beautiful clear blue sky? On our drive today, we encountered dark skies, lightning, and rain. It was not a perfect day, but, the scenery was still awesome!  We were delighted to see several deer and wild turkeys!
