Buffalo, WY

Leaving Devils Tower, we continued west on I-90 to Buffalo, WY.  We chose the Indian Campground and RV Park for the night.  The park owner gave us some suggestions for sight-seeing and off we went.

We drove to the Crazy Woman Canyon Road, off of highway 16.  It was a leisurely drive through an exceptionally scenic part of the Bighorn Mountains. We started at the top of Crazy Woman Canyon, winding our way down through picturesque rock formations. Most of the way, the road stayed close to the cascading waters of Crazy Woman Creek.  The road took us through a dramatic gorge, with fantastic views of towering canyon walls.  As we pulled out of the canyon, the road continued onto rolling prairie land, taking us back to Buffalo. It was a fairly easy drive on a narrow gravel road.  There were only a couple of rough spots where our jeep was a plus.  All of that is easy for me to say, since Ken was doing all the driving!

Returning to Buffalo, we drove to the historic downtown and the Occidental Hotel. The hotel has hosted many notorious guests; Butch Cassidy and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, Tom Horn, Teddy Roosevelt, President Herbert Hoover and Ernest Hemingway.

The hotel has been beautifully restored to its original grandeur and we were allowed to tour the downstairs rooms. It was fun to try to picture what it would have been like to be a hotel guest in the 1880’s.

At the end of our day, we stepped into the Occidental Saloon and sat at the 25-foot bar where cowboys, sheriffs, desperados and cattle barons gathered. We enjoyed a couple of beers sitting at the saloon bar that was brought in by wagon over a hundred years ago.
