A Green Giant and Gorgeous Waterfalls

3 Sep

It was a foggy morning as we left Red Wing, MN and worked our way towards Interstate 90.  After many miles of farmland, I began to look for alternate things to see along our route.  I saw a sign indicating that we were getting close to Blue Earth.  I searched through my AAA book and found out some interesting things about Blue Earth, MN.  First, Blue Earth was named for the Blue Earth River and the bluish clay found in its riverbanks.  Second, the Chocolate Dream(Eskimo Pie) originated in Blue Earth.  However, the most interesting thing to me:  The 55 foot tall Jolly Green Giant Statue!  Ken, we need to stop in Blue Earth!

Leaving the Giant behind, we continued on to Sioux Falls, SD.

After checking into the KOA and stopping at Culvers for dinner, we drove to Falls Creek Park to view the waterfalls.  The park covers 123 acres  is a gorgeous setting for the waterfalls.  An average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second.

The Falls of the Big Sioux River have been a focus of life in the region throughout history. The Native Americans were the first to visit the falls and take stories of them to European explorers. They have been the center of recreation and industry since the founding of the city in 1856.

Upon arrival to the park, it seemed like everyone in Sioux Falls was there to view the falls.  There were people everywhere!
