Taos to Amarillo

It was a cool 64 degrees when we left Taos and headed back to Santa Fe. The high mountain road was too curvy for our motor home, so we backtracked to Santa Fe to pick up I-40 towards Amarillo, TX.

We have driven through Amarillo several times, but never stopped. We heard from our friends that we should stay at the Amarillo RV Ranch and have dinner at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. We took their advice!

We checked into the Ranch and made arrangements for 6:30 PM Limo Pick-up for our Friday Date Night at the Big Texan…Home of the Free 72 ounce steak.

We arrived at the Big Texan in a Limo complete with a Longhorn Hood Ornament! We stepped out in front of the bright yellow building with Texas flags flapping like pennants. There was a huge steer, ”Big Moo”, in the parking lot wearing a sign advertising the Free 72 oz steak. In order to get the steak dinner for free, the entire meal has to be consumed within 1 hour. The meal includes: 72 oz steak, shrimp cocktail. baked potato, salad, roll with butter. Over 50,000 have started the challenge and less than 9000 have finished.

We stepped inside, ordered a beer, and waited 30 minutes for our dinner seating. We were seated on the upper floor of the Dining Hall, which provided a great view of the entire dining hall, including the special section for anyone trying to complete the 72 oz steak challenge.

We each ordered a steak dinner, but not the enormous challenge portion! The food was excellent! However, we were disappointed that no one was taking the 72 oz challenge while we were seated!

It was the best Friday Night Date Night this month!
