We left Santa Fe and drove the scenic drive to Taos. It was so much more fun to drive on country roads to get the flavor of the area. We drove along the Rio Grande River and spotted a few rafting groups battling the rapids.
After settling into our campsite, we stopped by the visitors center to get advice and directions on things to see and do. With maps in hand, we drove to The Plaza area but decided to return later in the day. We drove to the edge of town to the Taos Pueblo. The Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited community. We did not take the tour, but I did try to get a few photos from the parking lot.
Next we drove 10 minutes west of Taos to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The bridge is a steel deck bridge 1,272 feet long and spans the gorge 600 feet above the Rio Grande. We walked to the mid-span observation deck to down at the river and rugged cliff walls. It sure is a long,long, way down!
A few miles further down the road we stopped a the Greater World Earthship community. An Earthship is a radically sustainable home made of recycled materials. The homes allow their owners to live in harmony with the environment. The structures were interestingly odd! There was even a fence/wall made out of various colors of glass bottles and tires! And our friends think the RV lifestyle is weird???
Next on our itinerary: The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway. The byway looped 84 miles through mountains, valleys, mesas, and national forest. As we drove the byway, passing through the small communities of Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, and Angel Fire, we were cirlcling Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico at 13,161 feet.
We returned to The Plaza for a quick stroll. The Plaza has a collection of shops, galleries, restaurants, and historic sties.
Before returning to the RV Park, we stopped by the Overland Sheepskin Co. Ken had shopped in the store 30 years ago with a colleague and wanted to get a picture to send his friend. The grounds surrounding the shop were filled with beautiful flowers and metal wind ornaments. So Pretty!
We had a fantastic day touring Taos, NM but we are ready to continue on our adventure!
